Benedict Laboratory researchers are currently mixing
and testing samples of UHPC. Ductal, an UHPC manufactured by LaFarge,
samples are currently being prepared in cylinders, as well as, two
and three square inch beams. These specimens will undergo testing
to determine their modulus of elasticity, compressive strength,
and flexural tensile strength. Specimens will be varied as to when
they start to receive their steam curing rather than a simple air
curing. Beams will be compared as to how the time that steam curing
is begun effects the strength and elasticity of the concrete samples.
With all the benefits that UHPC provides (e.g. increased strength,
high durability, and sustainability) researchers hope to see more
widespread use of this product. This project is intended to determine
the effects the time of a steam cure has on the strength. The hope
is to help show the feasibility of UHPC's use in the precast concrete
industry. For further information on this project, or other ongoing
research using Ultra High Performance Concrete please contact Chris
